- Can you train my dog to NOT do something, a
bad behavior?
We do not do “Corrective training” to fix a problem behavior. However, we believe that the positively reinforced training that we provide could make a good foundation for a dog to learn to obey commands and follow rules that may ultimately correct bad behavior. We start everyday with the most important ingredient to obedience learning, exercise! And lots of it.
- Can I choose any skill in any order?
You may choose any skill you feel your dog needs to learn; however, we recommend that every dog know how to do the first 6 skills in that order before moving on to any others.
- Do you gurantee that my dog will learn the skill or my money book?
We make no guarantees that your dog will be able to perform the command for you after a session of Lil Scouts. However, we DO guarantee that we will do our best to teach your pup as much as we can during each 30-minute session until they’ve mastered it. We’ve had very positive results since we started, with most dogs mastering the commands even faster than their parents thought they could!
- How long will it take for my dog to “Master” a
skill?
Every dog we’ve trained is different. For full mastery of a skill, (*it depends on which skill) but on average we estimate about 4 sessions for most dogs. But many customers are happy with results after even less than that. You will get a Post Card from your pup each day with a video included so you can see for yourself how school is going. You’ll also have the opportunity to Meet the Trainer each month for an in-person lesson.
- What style training would you say you offer?
Our style of training is reward based! Treats, praise, repetition, and corrections. If your dog needs special treats, let us know! Most dogs love to please. And everything at Poochie’s is always super fun- now including training!
- Can I sign my dog up even though he is trained already?
Absolutely! If your dog knows all the tricks, it can still be a good refresher and LOTS of fun to join The Lil’ Scouts program. In fact, we recommend certain prerequisite classes before learning the next skill. Ultimately, it’s all up to you to let us know what you’d like your dog to learn next.
- Can Lil Scouts Socialization help with my dog that is very Timid? Or has had a bad experience with other dogs in the past?
Yes! It’s our specialt
- Do you potty train?
Technically no, but over the years we’ve discovered that daycare has helped dogs figure this out. Our routine of IN and OUT all day long allows dogs to figure out that outside is the place to “go” pretty quickly.
- Can I do training classes but not pay for boarding or daycare?
These lessons will only be offered in addition to boarding or daycare. It allows us to keep cost down, and another benefit is that we can ensure exercise before training. We believe it’s a key component for a dog’s best state of mind.
- How do I as the human learn to train/continue training at home?
With each new skill your pooch is signed up for you will receive a handout created by our trainers to help you practice at home what we are teaching him or her here at Poochie’s. Every 1on1 session you complete entitles you to attend one of our Meet the Leaders dates. You and your pup can come and practice your new skill with the Scout Leader in person on the first Wednesday of the month from 5:30pm to 7pm OR on the third Saturday of the month from 10:30am to 12pm. You only need to rsvp via email.
- Do we train against dog aggression?
This program is not made to correct experienced dogs that already have developed severe dog aggression. However, you may have seen your dog behave in an aggressive way in certain situations, like walking on a leash in the neighborhood, –it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are aggressive by nature and therefore shouldn’t be allowed to socialize. If you’re unsure about your dog’s reactions to other dogs we encourage to come in and let us help. We will do a safe “Temperament Test” with your dog and then we’ll be able to let you know if your dog is a good candidate for our Lil Scout Socialization training. In most cases, they can be running with their dog friends at Poochie’s in no time at all!
- Can you teach my dog things that are not on the lists so far?
We are currently only offering what we have listed, but we are open to hearing suggestions please let us know.
When you come to pick up your pup, the manager and trainer will meet with you in the lounge to talk about the session and the plan going forward.
Second Visit: Sniffing butts. Your dog and their Scout Leader will make friends together in a safe and controlled setting. Some dogs are running and playing off-leash by the end of just the first session! It just all depends on the natural pace of each dog we train. Your Scout Leader will keep you informed.
Costs: The fee for each visit (after the first evaluation day) is $25 for each socialization session (about 45 min long), plus $10 for the first hour of daycare and $3 each additional hour (max of $27 if staying more than 6 hours). All stays must include at least the first one hour of daycare
A well socialized and exercised dog makes for a we ll rounded citizen that’s cool and comfortable in almost any situation.
Dogs of any age can begin their socialization training with us by enrolling in Lil Scouts. We will safely build your dogs confidence at your dogs pace, nature’s pace.
For some dogs this means baby steps over a few days/sessions. Others will be running with the pack after only one 30 minute session! When you see your dog first experience the joy of having dogfriends, you’ll see why it’s been our passion since 2004.
